World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev is confident going back to professional tennis. The player, along with Novak Djokovic, will headline Southern and Western Open (Cincinnati Masters) and US Open. After almost six months of impromptu hiatus, he is ready to be back.

First Tournaments Are Not Easy Says Daniil Medvedev

In a recent interview with ATP, he said this is the first many players had to be out of the game for months. When asked how did he prepare to come back he said, “Everybody has been practicing and preparing a lot. And I am sure 6 months without tennis is going to affect a lot of people. So we’re gonna see some unbelievable results may be surprising ones.

“I was trying to keep my shape for all of this time, for all of the six months. But of course, I had to take a lot of time for myself also, take a lot of time off to be fresh and not exhausted when tournaments come back… think we did a great job but as I’m saying first tournaments are gonna be not easy for everybody.”

The interviewer asked him if the entire experience would be strange without the fans, whether the players need to be “self-motivating” during the matches.

He further went on to say, “When you go out on court and you know that it’s a competitive tennis match, you play for glory, you play for yourself, you play to prove yourself that you are the best. And that’s where I think during the match you’re gonna forget that there’s no fans. You’re gonna be just trying to win the match. But of course it’s gonna be strange…playing in this big court with probably only your coach sitting and cheering you up so it’s gonna be special. I don’t how to expect it but mentally everybody is still prepared too. Because the most important is to win a match.”

Last year, Daniil Medvedev was on top of his game. He won the Cincinnati Masters as well as reached the final of the US Open. With the strange circumstances, Medvedev is confident that he will give his best and “take it as it is.”

US Open is the first Grand Slam to be held in the pandemic era. It will start on and from 31st August 2020 in the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Centre.
