On shining young player on the ATP circuit, Jannik Sinner achieved a 6-3, 6-2 over the top-seed Gael Monfils in Antwerp and later credited his four-set match against Stan Wawrinka at the New York major this year.

“That experience against Stan Wawrinka at the US Open helped me today, Gael is an excellent player and world no. 13 so I’m happy to beat him and earn a chance to play at least one more match here in Antwerp,” he said.

In Antwerp, Sinner has reached the semifinals of the European Open and will be competing against the undaunted player of the ATP Tour, Stan Wawrinka. His 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 winner over the American, Frances Tiafoe makes him the youngest ATP semifinalist over the past five years since the 17-year-old Borna Coric at Swiss Indoors Basel 2014.

I had a normal preparation for the match against Gael who didn’t play at his best today. I took the opportunity and played a very solid match. I couldn’t find my first serve but it was there to help me in the crucial moments and that was the key today,” Jannik Sinner said.

Last season, during this time of the year, Sinner was ranked 778th in the world and presently he has improved his rankings to World Number 119.  He also received secret practice sessions from Roger Federer.

So it’s true, I practiced with both generations,” Roger Federer said. “Yeah, I think Sinner is a good player. I practiced with him outside of Monaco after the Laureus Awards last year in February. I saw him when he was young. He made some nice improvements, obviously gotten stronger,” Federer added.
