Last weekend was a dark one for the motorsport community as Anthoine Hubert was killed in a frightening crash. Another victim was American driver Juan Manuel Correa, luckily he lived to tell the tale, but he is severely injured. Correa sustained fractures on both legs and minor spinal injuries, though fortunately, he has begun his recovery.

Now, the driver and his family have issued a statement thanking the fans and the motorsports community. They revealed worrying news that new complications have arisen, as a consequence of the massive impact. As it turned out, Juan Manuel Correa was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

This resulted in the Alfa Romeo junior driver falling into Acute Respiratory Failure. So, Correa was kept in the Intensive Care Unit, which specialised in respiratory injuries. He was kept in an induced state of unconsciousness and under ECMO support.

“Maria and I wish to take this opportunity to give our condolences to the Hubert family for their loss. Our hearts are broken, and we can only imagine the pain this loss has brought them.”

Correa’s recovery period is currently unknown, but it is safe to say that he may likely be out for the season. The 20-year old is reportedly in a critical, but stable condition and had a four-hour operation in Liege.

Formula Two is one rung below F1 and many of the drivers are affiliated to grand prix teams. Britain’s George Russell, now with Williams, won the F2 title last year after Monegasque Charles Leclerc, now at Ferrari, in 2017.
