Gundappa Viswanath, former Indian cricketer, is confident that India skipper Virat Kohli can overhaul Sachin Tendulkar’s 100 international centuries. Kohl has had an exceptional run to smash his 35th ODI hundred in the South Africa ODI series. In the Test scenario, Kohli has 21 centuries to his name. So far, Kohli has scored 56 international hundreds to Tendulkar’s 100 centuries.

The 65-year-old Viswanath said, “Kohli has shown consistency, performance and is getting hundreds regularly, he has got every chance to break that record, but it’s a tall order. Records are eventually meant to be broken. I am happy for that and I think even Sachin will be happy. But it is still a long way to go.

He hopes that the Indian skipper performs at the same level consistently and said that Kohli has been ‘absolutely brilliant’. The former India batsman praised Virat’s consistency, hunger for runs and aggressiveness. He said that Kohli’s team shows utmost confidence and are doing very well.

Viswanath was careful to avoid comparing Kohli with other Indian captains, though. He said, “I do not wish to compare but certainly the result is showing what Virat is doing. They beat most of the teams in India in recent times and in South Africa they came very close to beating them, especially in the first Test. They came back and won the third Test. I have confidence on this team that they will do well against other teams in their own countries.”

He also spoke about the performance of wrist spinners, saying, “Wrist spinners always come in handy because they can get turn on any wicket. Kuldeep is showing amazing consistency, I don’t think they picked up his wrong uns’.”

The Indian cricket team are currently facing South Africa in a 3-match T20 series and have won the first match.
