The ongoing Fed Cup 2020 is giving tennis fans some thrilling tennis matches. Serena Williams defeated former World No. 5 Jelelna Ostapenko in a gripping match in the qualifiers of the Fed Cup. The American won 7-6(4), 7-6(3) to give USA a 2-0 lead over Latvia.

She now has an unbeaten record of 14-0 in the competition, dating back to her debut in 1999.

Earlier, Sofia Kenin too won her match against Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-2 in a fairly straightforward match.

Serena Williams in a good mood

Williams has endured a few heartbreaking times in recent seasons. She is on a quest to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of most Grand Slams. She is currently stuck on 23, just a single Major behind the Australian Court.

The 2017 Australian Open title is her latest Grand Slam victory, despite playing the finals of both Wimbledon and US Open in two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019.

The American’s search for the 24th Major continues. She could not go deep into the 2020 Australian Open, losing out in the third round to Wang Qiang. The highly competitive Serena Williams was,no doubt, livid with herself with her poor start to the season.

However, it seems like she has moved on from her early exit Down Under. After her straight sets victory, Williams sat down with Kathy Rinaldi to answer questions for the media. In the press conference, a journalist asked what led her to come back and play in the Fed Cup now, after 2018. She had a rather funny response.

“To be honest, I always try to play. I’ve just been constantly injured. Last year I rolled my ankle and I was out for several weeks. And then the one after Miami, I even offered to come as a hitting partner but my knee was so bad. I missed all clay court season until the French Open. Every time I try to play something happens, so this year I was like let me exit Australia early so I could play Fed Cup.” 

Both Serena Williams and USA Fed Cup captain Rinaldi had a hearty laugh over the quip. Williams will now face Anastasija Sevastova while Kenin faces Ostapenko.
