Lewis Hamilton’s Dominance in F1 Was Predicted By Michael Schumacher Even Before He Was a World Champion

Back in 2008, Michael Schumacher predicted that Lewis Hamilton would be the one to break his record of 7 world championships. Fast-forward to more than a decade later, the German legend has got it perfect, as Hamilton is just one shy if Schumi’s tally.

Speaking to the BBC’s Inside Sport program, Schumacher said, “I would say, absolutely, yes [Hamilton could win seven titles].”

He even confessed that when he was on his own record run, not many pegged him to overhaul the record set by Juan Manuel Fangio. To that end, he was of the opinion that the sole purpose of records, is to be beaten, so he would not be too torn up if someone beat his record.

On an interesting note, Michael Schumacher rated Hamilton highly, though he was coy on whether the Briton was the best current driver in F1.

How close is Hamilton to beating the record set by Michael Schumacher?

With 2019 done and dusted, Hamilton enters the 2020 season with six world championships in the bag and gunning to equal Schumacher. Ever since the V6 Turbo Hybrid era began, Mercedes has been the dominant force, with Lewis Hamilton rarely going in challenged seriously. The only exception was 2016 when he lost the title to his teammate and bitter rival, Nico Rosberg.

Now that Rosberg has retired, Lewis Hamilton has a free token to romp to the title, unless his current teammate Valtteri Bottas can stop him. However, the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull will be eager to get in on the act and halt the runaway Mercedes train.

Personally speaking, Red Bull stands a better chance as they have a strong lineup of Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon. Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari needs to rein in their driver duo and prevent another Brazil 2019 incident, this time multiplied by 10.
