Lionel Messi goes Past Cristiano Ronaldo as Barcelona Thrash Valladolid

Lionel Messi was on the scoresheet twice as Brcelona thrashed Valladolid 5-1 on Tuesday. In the process, Messi has broken another of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record.

Barcelona started the match on the front foot with Clement Lenglet opening the scoring for the hosts in the second minute. Valladolid equalised in the 15th minute through Kiko, but their joy was short-lived as Arturo Vidal and Messi took Barcelona two goals ahead scoring within a space of six minutes.

Messi second goal came in the 75th minute- a signature Messi-free kick, which broke Ronaldo’s record of most number of goals in club football.

Messi’s free kick was his 608th goal for Barcelona in just 695 official club games – overtaking Ronaldo’s tally of 606 goals, after playing in 813 matches for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United , Real Madrid and Juventus.

Talking about him after the match, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde said he had “run out of words” to describe Messi.

“What else can be said about him? I’ve run out of words,” Valverde said. “We always know that he will appear, whatever the match. His talent isn’t comparable to anything, the reality is that every time he touches the ball, something special happens. I just don’t know what to say.”

“I’m convinced that what he sees, you can’t even see from the stands. And now he looks fresher. We’re happy because he’s doing well and because we’re enjoying how he plays.”

Talking about the match overall, Valverde said: “It wasn’t an excessive match, but I think we played well.”

“We’re in a week of three matches and it was important to start it well.

“We have a big squad and all the players are fighting to play. There are players who deserve to play but can’t always do so. We will be managing the group.”

Barcelona next play away to Levante on Saturday before welcoming Slavia Prague for a Champions League group game.
