What is Solheim Cup? Get to Know About the Ryder Cup of Women’s Golf

The Solheim Cup is a professional women’s golf tournament similar to the men’s Ryder Cup. Even in the Solheim Cup, golfers from Europe and the United States compete against each other for three days. They held the inaugural event of the Solheim Cup in 1990, and they play this event every alternate year. 

Tam Europe is the defending champion of this event as they won the Solheim Cup in 2019 in Scotland. However, United States has won the cup the most times, with 10 wins, while Europe has 6. Moreover, The 2021 Solheim Cup is all set to begin on August 31. 

Format and qualification process for Solheim Cup

The format for Solheim Cup is similar to that of the Ryder Cup. The event is played for three days. With eight foursomes, eight four-balls played on days one and two. Furthermore, there are 12 singles on the final day. Moreover, this year the event will be played at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. 

Meanwhile, the qualification process is pretty straightforward. There are a total of 12 players on both teams. Few get qualified directly, while few through the captain’s pick. There is a points system with American players on the LPGA Tour receiving points for each top-twenty finish on Tour. Nine players get a direct qualification, while the remaining three will be done through the captain’s pick.

Moreover, for the European team, the top two players from LET and the top four from women’s world golf rankings qualify directly. And the captain will select the remaining three players based on the current form of the players. 

Furthermore, the team captains are most probably retired professional golfers with Solheim Cup playing experience. Currently, Pat Hurst is the captain for Team U.S., while Catriona Matthew is the skipper for Team Europe.
