Manager Louis van Gaal spent just two seasons at Manchester United before Jose Mourinho was ushered in to take over the club. Despite winning the 2015-16 FA Cup, the Dutchman was sent packing just two days later. Manchester United fans are gearing up for the off-season in preparation for an assault on the Premier League title next term. Van Gaal had grand ideas when he took the Old Trafford hotseat, but was barely in the job to make much of a change. Van Gaal did complete 12 transfer signings at the club. It has been three seasons since his departure and it is time to look back and see if any of those players have succeeded as a Red Devil.
Radamel Falcao joined Manchester United on a season-long loan from Monaco. He scored just once in 29 appearance and went from being one of the world’s best strikers to being just another footballer.
Daley Blind was a great servant at Old Trafford and incredibly under-appreciated. He left the club in the summer of 2018 and returned to Ajax. There, he helped the side win the Eredivisie title, KNVB Cup, and reach the Champions League semi finals.
Angel Di Maria
In 2014, Angel Di Maria was Manchester United’s club record signing. However, his arrival is a reflection Manchester United’s current problem of buying big names that don’t fit into the side. Di Maria still played well scoring four goals in 32 games with 12 assists which led the team. He spent just one season at Old Trafford.
Marcos Rojo was another player to excel for a team in the Portuguese league only to fail once he got to England. Rojo has never been good enough to be a regular in the team and injuries have prevented him from playing on a constant basis.
Ander Herrera is an undervalued player at Manchester United that seems to have been taken for granted. He was missed greatly at the tail end of this season while out injured. It coincided with the Red Devils’ terrible form. Herrera will join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this offseason.
Terrible leg injury aside, Luke Shaw has been an average full-back at best. This past season he didn’t look fit when selected under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Shaw is another player that looks like he needs a fresh start somewhere else. Somehow, he was voted player of the season at Old Trafford. That shows just how bad the team is currently.
Van Gaal signed Bastian Schweinsteiger due to his professionalism and maturity. The German may have had both in spades, but he was well past his prime. Schweinsteiger was allowed to leave Manchester United in March 2017 to join the Chicago Fire in the United States. However, he will be retiring from football at the end of the season
Memphis Depay had a lot of potential but once Van Gaal was out the door, Mourinho sold Depay months after taking charge. Depay scored just two goals in 33 games for Manchester United. Since joining Lyon in January 2017, the Dutchman has tallied 34 goals in 88 matches.
Sergio Romero joined Manchester United from Sampdoria and was expected to take over goalkeeping duties from David De Gea. The Spaniard was set to join Real Madrid, but that move was never finalised. Romero has remained at Old Trafford as De Gea’s back up and proved himself to be a fine player when called upon.
Fans may forget Morgan Schneiderlin was even at the club. He had impressed at Southampton influencing Manchester United to purchase him. However, Schneiderlin was a major disappointment and has never recovered since leaving.
Anthony Martial joined from Monaco and quickly became a solid performer under Van Gaal. His form declined under Mourinho as the manager continually ridiculed him. Martial signed a new contract to stay at Manchester United in 2019.
Italian full-back Matteo Darmian was a highly sought-after player when he joined Manchester United. He was fantastic under Van Gaal, but after Mourinho’s arrival was reduced to a squad player role. Darmian made just six league appearances in 2018-19 and heads into the final year of his contract.
