Max Verstappen has thrown down a gauntlet for Red Bull Racing. Team Boss, Christian Horner recently commented that 2019 was the best year for Max Verstappen. Reacting to those statements at the FIA Prize Ceremony, Max replied:

“For me it had to be the best year. That is just natural. I think just the experience you gain over the years it definitely helps you a lot.

“The package this year, in the beginning, it was a bit of a struggle. We could not really fight for victories. Podiums were also quite hard. So it was all about trying to be as consistent as we could be.

“We just hope that we can be more competitive next year. We know that we have to be competitive from the start and want to be able to fight for the title. So we are putting all our efforts into that. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to go for it. We’re going to try everything we can.”

In the turbo-hybrid era, Red Bull have generally played catch up. In 2017 and early 2019, Max Verstappen was beset with problems ranging from reliability and unfamiliarity with his race package. He has always finished seasons strongly. This indicates a strong start from Red Bull, will be instrumental in helping him win his maiden world championship.

Red Bull know they possess a generational talent in Max Verstappen. His racing and marketing prowess are an attractive proposition for any team. With Lewis Hamilton being linked with a move to Ferrari, Mercedes are waiting for an opportunity to secure Max Verstappen’s contract. Red Bull need to tie down Max Verstappen, whose current contract ends in 2020.

When asked about his future, Max was more likely keeping his cards close to him.

“To be honest, I don’t really think about it too much. I know there are other possibilities of course after next year. I have one more year under contract. But I think what is more important is that we just see what happens in the beginning of the season. And then from there onwards we’ll see what happens.”

In what’s a definite boost of confidence for Red Bull to foster their relationship, Max believes the team can help him win a drivers title.

“Well, that’s what I believe. That’s why I’m with the team. I think, you know, they’ve shown in the past, they could do it. So it’s not something which is just wishful thinking.

It’s not easy. You know that the competition is very strong. But like I said before, we’re going to try everything next year, because it’s going to be an important year, and then we’ll see what happens.”

In 2019, Max Verstappen recorded 3 wins and 9 podium finishes . This helped him to finish 3rd in the world championship, in a season long battle with both Ferrari’s.

Overall, Max Verstappen has an exemplary record. 8 wins and 31 podiums in 102 starts. It’s hard to believe he just turned 22 in September.

With Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton all out of contract after 2020, their futures will be a major talk of the paddock this season.
