Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has been a constant threat to Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel for race wins. Although he is much younger than his two rivals, his roots in racing run very deep. In fact, Max Verstappen’s family has been heavily involved in racing, from his parents, to relatives and even his sister.
Father – Jos Verstappen
The first member of Max Verstappen’s family to be involved in racing is, his father, Jos. It was worth noting that Verstappen Sr, now managing his son’s career, also raced in Formula One. The younger Verstappen was also regularly been at the tracks during his Dad’s F1 career.
Jos Verstappen drove for Benetton, Tyrrell, Arrows, Simtek, Stewart, Honda and Minardi in a career that spanned from 1994 to 2003. However, while Max has seven victories under his belt, Jos was less successful and managed 2 third place finishes.
Outside Formula One, Verstappen Sr competed in the 2005-06 season of A1 Grand Prix for Netherlands. He won in South Africa, and even took victory in 24 Hours of Le Mans with Van Merksteijn Motorsport in 2008.
Mother – Sophie Kumpen
The next member of Max Verstappen’s family is his mother Sophie Kumpen. However, she was mostly successful in the karting circles. She won the Andrea Margutti Trophy in the Formula A series in 1995. She even competed alongside the likes of ex-F1 drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli.
Uncle – Anthony Kumpen
Next up in Max Verstappen’s family circle is his uncle, Anthony Kumpen. Kumpen initially competed at karting level, before stepping up to win the GT2 championship in 1998. He followed that up with the GT title 12 months later.
The Belgian often competed in endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
But he has since enjoyed success in NASCAR, winning the 2014 and 2016 championships in the Euro Series – which included beating Mathias Lauda, son of F1 legend Niki.
Sister – Victoria Verstappen
With several members of Max Verstappen’s family as former racers, there was no surprise his sister also pursued a life in the fast lane. Victoria-Jane Verstappen spent a lot of time in karting.
Still only 20, there is plenty of time for her to step up, but has since been helping Red Bull Netherlands behind the scenes.
Victoria is also very active on social media, with over 110,000 followers on Instagram along with having her own fashion line.
