When one hears about Racism in sport, you would expect something like this in football. So, it was truly shocking to learn that reigning Formula One champions Mercedes were embroiled in a racism row.

The good news is that, the outfit fired four employees and disciplined three others following an enquiry. Apparently, at the team’s factory, there was an incident of racist bullying, according British newspapers on Saturday.

The German team confirmed in a statement that four individuals had been dismissed. As it turns out, the dismissals took place on Aug. 2 after an internal investigation. The investigation confirmed that there were “breaches of our diversity and equality policy.”

It is worth noting that defending champion Lewis Hamilton has Caribbean roots and has often spoken out against racism. Back in the month of March, the 5-time World champion called for a strong stand against this vile act in all walks of life.

He was speaking after the England national football team reported abusive chants during a Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.

“I remember being at school and you got a slap on the hand for it (racism) and it is just allowed to slide. That shouldn’t happen anywhere. Action should be taken and we should be a lot stricter with it,” Hamilton said.

Mercedes had a semi-difficult day during the qualifying session of the Russian Grand Prix 2019. Their only bright spark was when Hamilton snuck into the front row for Sunday’s race, splitting the stampeding Ferrari duo.
