In 2019, Scuderia Ferrari established itself as the team to beat in terms of pace. However, Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff expects that the dynamic will change in their favor in the new season.

Ferrari possessed one of the strongest engines in the 2019 season and cemented it in the second half of the championship. However, in the wake of the FIA’s new technical guidelines, it is predicted that Ferrari’s engine advantage will shrink dramatically.

Speaking of the technical guidelines, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed that with them in place, Ferrari will finally ‘stop cheating‘. Though Ferrari has vehemently denied changing anything about their engine after the guidelines came into effect.

In an interview with GPUpdate.net Wolff acknowledged the gulf between the Mercedes power and Ferrari power. For the 2020 season though, the Mercedes F1 boss is confident that the team’s engine department can catch up and surpass its Italian rival.

It is also worth mentioning that Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko claimed that Honda is also on par with Mercedes in the power department. However, Toto disagreed and explained that the power difference between all three top teams differed at every circuit.

So, he suggested that Honda needed to work even harder so that Red Bull Racing could mount a serious shot at the title in 2020. For the coming season, Mercedes F1 is aiming for a seventh consecutive title double, as well as Lewis Hamilton’s seventh title.

However, Wolff cautioned, “But just as important is that we, as a team and organization, continue to improve. That is something that motivates me just as well. It is about finding a way that you as a team always remain hungry for success. What circumstances do I have to create? anyone who keeps hungry? That is a very interesting psychological challenge that I face.”
