Following their victory in the quarter-finals of the Family Circle Cup, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have secured the No.1 position in the doubles leaderboard for the end of the season WTA finals tennis championship to be played in Singapore from October 25 to November 1.

The duo defeated Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova by 7-5,4-6,13-11 in a match that lasted an hour and 41 minutes, fighting off a match point 10-9 in the match tie-break and needing six match points of their own, to finally defeat their opponent.

Their latest win ensured that they will overtake Australian Open champions Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova (currently No.2) and Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina (currently No.1) in the doubles leaderboard, according to the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) website.

Mirza, currently No.3 in the individual rankings for doubles players, will become the top-ranked player if she and Hingis manage to win the Family Circle Cup. Martina Hingis, the former World No. 1, is currently No.4 in the individual ranking for doubles players.

The Mirza-Hingis partnership started in March only after the former decided to part ways with her former team mate Hsieh Su-wei. The partnership has been very successful till now, with them winning two back to back titles including the Miami Open.
