Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros have been a success story for both sides. Ever since his trade from the Detroit Tigers in 2017, Verlander opened a new chapter in his baseball career. Once playing from a mid-table team, the Astros pitcher is now a World Series winner.

But many people might not know that after moving to the Houston Astros, Justin Verlander and his wife, Kate Upton, missed their wedding due to the World Series in 2017. Notably, the Houston Astros won their first and only World Series title in the same year.

2017 was a very special year for Verlander. Not only did he win the World Series for the Astros, but he also married the love of his life, Kate Upton. But it was not easy for the couple. The couple had planned a destination wedding in Italy, surrounded by their family and friends. However, there was one minor problem with the wedding, the couple was absent from their wedding.

At the start of the season in 2017, Verlander was playing for the Detroit Tigers. But the Tigers traded him to the Astros on the deadline day. Per Verlander and Kate, they had already planned the wedding on the Game 7 day, because none of them expected the Tigers would play the World Series.

But, after joining the Astros, little did he know he will not be at his wedding. In an old interview with Jimmy Fallon, the couple shared why they were absent from their wedding.

“We planned the wedding before obviously he got traded…,” the couple said. “And literally, when we were planning this thing, we were talking like the best case scenario we go to the world series. There is really literally only one thing that could throw a huge wrench in all of our plans. It is not the World Series. It is going to be Game 7 of the World Series. And guess where we went.”

Notably, the Astros won their first-ever World Series title in MLB history. They defeated the LA Dodgers in the Game 7 to clinch the title. Since then, the Astros have made a couple of appearances in the World Series in the 2019 and 2021 seasons. But they failed to win the title on both occasions.
