‘Just Sort of Jumped Into It’- Yankees Legend Derek Jeter Once Talked About His Transformation From a Person of Kalamazoo to a New Yorker

Derek Jeter’s name is already written in the history of Major League Baseball as one of the best shortstops ever. The former New York Yankees shortstop came from a small town, Kalamazoo, to NYC and spread his charm all over the Big Apple. The transition from Kalamazoo to New York was difficult for the former Yankees’ captain. But he eventually got used to it. At first, he faced several hurdles but endured it all to become who he is today.

The city was new to him. Being a Yankee was new to him, and he had to figure it all out alone. His transition from Kalamazoo to NYC had its struggles, but nobody could have handled it any better than Jeter did.

How did Derek Jeter become a New Yorker?

In the starting, Derek Jeter was struggling with the games. He even got told by George Steinbrenner that the management had high expectations of him. And that he has to work hard. With this, he was probably the only one from his team to live in the middle of the city. While most of the players had families and lived away from the city.

“I just sort of, I had to wing that (figuring out where to eat, and where to buy clothes from). I wanted to experience the whole thing. So, I just sort of jumped into it,” Jeter shared his early days’ struggles in an interview in 2017.

There was a point when all Jeter wanted to do was come back home to his mother. And if the former shortstop had done that early in his career, people would have missed out on the legend that Derek Jeter is.

Michigan and New York still live in him!

Notably, the former Yankee lived in Kalamazoo from the age of four till he got drafted by the New York Yankees. Then he lived in the Big Apple where he found his wife, Hannah Jeter (formerly Davis).

After taking retirement and getting married, he also became the CEO of the Marlins. And he had to move to Miami with his family for the same. However, Michigan and NYC never left him. In one of his interviews, he got asked about his five favorite rappers. Surely two of them were from Michigan and New York.
