This was due to the popularity of both Jeter and Carey, coupled with the latter’s ongoing divorce. Although Carey had split up from her then-husband Tony Mottola, the divorce proceedings were still going on when she started dating Derek Jeter.

Carey once opened up about her divorce. The pop icon talked about the whole situation surrounding the end of her marriage. While doing so, she revealed how Mottola tried to get her to stay by throwing expensive gifts at her.

Mottola tried to stop Carey from leaving him by giving her lavish gifts

In her memoir ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’, the pop icon opened up about her divorce in detail. Carey stated her husband was buying her expensive gifts to keep her from leaving. Furthermore, she revealed that these expensive gifts only added to the pile of trash she called her marriage.

In the book, she wrote, “Look, I—both of us—knew we were at the end of the road long before I left. I began leaving in increments, and in response, Tommy started making desperate last-minute attempts to get me to stay. He bought me a gorgeous but pointless Carnival red convertible Jaguar with a crème leather interior and matching drop top. It sat in the driveway of our thirty-million-dollar mansion—one more expensive thing to add to the lavish scrap heap that was our marriage.”

The gifts did not work, and their divorce was finalized. The two went their separate ways, and Carey was happy while dating a young Derek Jeter. But that also did not last very long. The two later split up into what was a messy and highly publicized breakup.

Why did Derek Jeter and Mariah Carey break up?

According to Cindi Berger, Carey’s spokesman at the time, the couple broke up due to the intense media coverage their relationship received. According to Entertainment Weekly, Berger said, “The media pressure was just too much for them”.
