‘That Can’t Happen!’- NY Yankees Catcher Left Stunned as Obscure MLB Rule Led to 16-Min Game Delay

Though the New York Yankees won the recent game against the Tampa Bay Rays, there was a bit of controversy in the game. During the eighth inning of the game, the umpires delayed the game for over 15 minutes.

The Yankees have emerged as the biggest surprise in the current season. Despite coming off a poor season in 2021 and even a dull free agency, the Yankees have no match in the entire Major League Baseball this season.

During the ongoing series against the Tampa Bay Rays, The Bronx Bombers registered their 13th consecutive win at the Yankee Stadium. However, the scenario could have been different in the second game of the series against the Rays. Because there was a pitching substitution confusion in the game. It also delayed the game for 16 minutes.

During the eighth inning of the game, the New York Yankees’ manager, Aaron Boone, made a pitching change into the game. Because he did not want the Rays hitter Ji-man Choi to face Miguel Castro.

Instead, he wanted the Lucas Luetge to face the Rays hitter. But umpires took too much time to check if Boone can execute a pitching substitution. It took approx 16 minutes for umpires to check.

Talking about the same, the Yankees catcher, Kyle Higashioka, said he did not feel good about the delay in the game.

“That can’t happen. It can’t take [16] minutes to figure out what’s going on. There’s got to be somebody that knows what to do,” Higashioka said. “I definitely did not feel good on the field after that long delay. I’m just glad we got through it.”

Aaron Boone also expressed his disappointment and said, “We can’t go out twice within an at-bat. If you announce a pinch-hitter, you can.” Notably, the Yankees’ manager stuck to the rule And ultimately, the umpires also realized the same.
