Cheating has always been a part of sports. Most athletes play their respective sports with no illegal supplements. However, there are a few rotten apples in every sport that leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth. The UFC as a promotion among other promotions has always strived to keep their respective sports clean. 

With the same vision in mind, the UFC partnered up with USADA in 2015 to ensure that the sport is clean and that they test the athletes regularly for performance-enhancing drugs. The UFC was one of the first, if not the first MMA promotion to do the same.

The US Government joins the fight to keep sports clean

The Rodchenkov anti-doping act of 2019 was made official yesterday. The official statement said, “Today, I have signed into law H.R. 835. The “Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act of 2019” (the “Act”).  The Act imposes criminal sanctions on certain persons involved in international doping fraud conspiracies and provides restitution for victims of such conspiracies.”

“Section 6 of the Act requires certain executive agencies, including the Department of Justice, to share information with the United States Anti-Doping Agency “with regard to any investigation related to a potential violation of section 3 of this Act.”  I appreciate that section 6 of the Act provides an exception to this disclosure requirement for information that would affect the “integrity of a criminal investigation,” but the exception may not cover all information that is protected by executive privilege.  My Administration will treat section 6 of the Act consistent with the President’s constitutional authority to control the dissemination of information, the disclosure of which could impair national security, foreign relations, law enforcement, or performance of the President’s constitutional duties.”

They named the bill after the whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, who helped expose Russia’s state-sponsored doping. The law gives power to American officials to pursue criminal penalties against anyone involved in doping at international events involving American athletes, sponsors, or broadcasters. 

The man in question said he destroyed over 1000 urine samples and provided banned substances to Russian athletes. This revelation led to a ban for Russian athletes at the 2016 Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics. Rodchenkov has been in hiding ever since.

This bill will not affect the MMA directly. However, it will ensure fair competition in sports such as Judo and wrestling, which are played at an international level. These are sports from where athletes often transition into MMA. Hence, this will indirectly help the sport of MMA.
