Mohammad Nabi to Retire from Test Cricket After Bangladesh Tour

Afghanistan all rounder Mohammad Nabi is set to retire from from Test cricket. Afghanistan team manager was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying that Nabi will retire after the ongoing test match against Bangladesh.

”Yes, he [Nabi] will retire after the ongoing Test match,” Team manager Nazim Jar Abdurrahimzai said without delving into the specifics of the all-rounder’s retirement.

Nabi has been an excellent servant for Afghanistan cricket and has served them from before their introduction to One Day International cricket in 2009. He will continue to play in ODI and T20s along with all the T20 leagues around the world, where he is in good demand.

Afghanistan have earned test series recently and the ongoing test match against Bangladesh is just their third, with their next test match to come in November against West Indies. Nabi has been a part of all three test matches.

Nabi also captained Afghanistan side into their first major ODI tournament- The 2014 Asia Cup, where they defeated Bangladesh and had a good tournament for someone playing for the first time. Nabi remained captain through the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup, but after a poor run of form which saw Afghanistan winning only one match in the World Cup, he resigned as captain in April 2015. He captained the side from 2013-2015.

His T20 career has been remarkable for him. Apart from being an important member in the national team, he played for various domestic leagues all over the world including Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League and more.

Afghanistan are currently playing against Bangladesh in a single test match. At stumps on Day 1, Afghanistan stand at a score of 271 for 5 against a spin laden Bangladesh attack. Rahmat Shah became the first Afghan to score a test century and Asghar Afghan is looking set to become the second.
