“My Big Goals”: Roger Federer Tells Kei Nishikori His Unfulfilled Reverie of Olympic Gold Medal

Switzerland’s greatest sportsman ever, Roger Federer has carried the burden of the sport for well over 15 years. Over the years, the maestro has enthralled us with the mind-boggling quality of his tennis. He’s won almost all the prizes that were up for grabs. However, Roger has never won a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Back in 2008 in Beijing, Federer won the gold medal in doubles along with compatriot Stan Wawrinka. The former World No. 1 also managed to bag the silver medal in 2012, losing out to Andy Murray in the final that year. After that, in 2016, Roger had to pull out of the event as he had injured his knee which required surgery.
Roger Federer: Playing in Tokyo Is a Big One

The Olympics is an event which takes place once every four years. Being unable to play in the Olympics is a missed opportunity. Recently while speaking to Kei Nishikori, Federer revealed his plans for the next year.
He said, “The big plan is to be there for the Olympics. You know this is for me the big one, it’s not a bad thing it was moved a little bit because of the problems I’ve had last year. I really hope I can come to Tokyo in Japan for that.”

As we’re well aware, due to the pandemic this year, most events have either been canceled or postponed. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 was one such event that had to follow suit.
Speaking on this, Federer added, “But it was a big shock for all of us when Wimbledon pulled out due to the pandemic and then the Tokyo Olympics shortly after that was moved. Let’s hope now for the best. For the Olympics games to be played in Tokyo next year, it is clearly one of my big goals.”

There is no doubt that winning the Olympics is a major goal for Roger. The 8-time Wimbledon champion has not played a competitive match since the Australian Open last year. It’ll be interesting to see how Federer prepares himself for 2021.
