2020 has been a great year for Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic. He started it off perfectly as he won the Australian Open, and he went on to pick up two more Masters’ 1000 titles. He now has the opportunity to end the year as World No. 1 for a record 6th time and the Serb is eyeing that achievement. In a recent interview, he said:

“I’m going to play the Vienna tournament that wasn’t originally on my schedule. I haven’t played in Vienna for 15 years, so I’m happy about that. This season, which was very intermittent, different, and weird, at the same time brought me a lot of success and I’m very satisfied with my game, points, ranking. I hope that, after the month and a half that’s left in this season, I will finish it as world number one. That’s my professional goal, and I’m going to work on it. It’s mostly up to me.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a new ranking system has been put in place and it has been helping Novak Djokovic. In this new system, players will not drop points at any event except the ATP Finals. This means that the Serb will only drop 200 points for the rest of the year.

In the race to No. 1, he is currently 1890 points ahead of World No. 2 Rafael Nadal. That lead will increase to 2090 after both of them drop the ATP Finals’ points. This means that Novak just has to win the Vienna Open to secure the No. 1 position because even if Rafa wins the Paris Masters and the ATP finals, he won’t have enough points to go past him.
