Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff Break Down in Tears After an Emotional US Open 2019 Match

An emotional Saturday night on the Arthur Ashe Stadium where the full house at Flushing Meadows rooted for their teenage phenom, Coco Gauff and World Number one, Naomi Osaka happen to snap her American major run. The Japanese, Osaka defeated the 15-year old, Gauff 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of the US Open 2019 in 65 minutes of time.

Post their match, Naomi Osaka requested Coco Gauff to share the on-court interview with her on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Initially, Coco was reluctant to pronounce words in the presence of her home crowd, but with Naomi’s insistence she showed up and the packed stadium gave a joyful gesture.

“She encouraged me to do it,” Gauff said while breaking down in the presence of the New Yorkers.  “I’m going to learn a lot from this match. She’s been so sweet to me, so thank you for this. Thank you. Thank you, Naomi. I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to take this moment away from her, because she really deserves it.”

Both the WTA women live in Florida and have shared the tennis courts before they turned professional. The new era contender on the WTA track, Naomi Osaka made her breakthrough last year at the US Open and on the court, she was asked, how is it to be a mentor for a budding wizard-like Gauff.

“I don’t think I’m a mentor,” the top-seed said. Later she addressed Coco’s team, simultaneously Osaka was carried away by emotions and broke down on the court. “You guys raised an amazing player,” Osaka continued.

“I remember I used to see you guys training in the same place as us. For me, like the fact that both of us made it, and we’re both still working as hard as we can, I think it’s incredible. I think you guys are amazing. I think, Coco, you’re amazing.”

Later in the press conference, Naomi Osaka revealed by she reached out to Coco Gauff after she won. “I wanted her to have her head high, not walk off the court sad. I want her to be aware that she’s accomplished so much, and she’s still so young,” the top-seed reflected. The defending champion at US Open 2019 will face Belinda Bencic in the fourth round. This year, Osaka has lost twice to Bencic.
