Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams Amongst the Most Tweeted About Female Athletes in 2020

For the last 25 years, Serena Williams has been the only dominant force on the women’s tour. Having won 23-Grand Slam singles titles, Williams’ tenacity and resilience have been a vast source of inspiration for aspiring tennis kids. Hailing Williams as her childhood idol, the 3-time Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka, has all the elements to become an all-time great.

Recently, an interesting statistic made the rounds on Twitter, which stated the Top-10 most tweeted about female athletes in the year 2020 worldwide. Having recently claimed her second US Open title, Osaka has been the most tweeted about female athlete in 2020.

Osaka has witnessed her celebrity status sky-rocketing over the last three years and also topped Williams to become the highest-paid female athlete of 2020. Being the first Asian player to achieve the No. 1 ranking in singles, Osaka is also known for her activism on and off the court.

Serena Williams grabs the second spot

The American claimed the second spot in the list of the Top-10 most tweeted about female athletes in 2020. Eyeing to equal Margaret Court’s record of winning 24 major championships, Williams has lost in her last four Grand Slam final appearances.

Williams’ long-time rival, Maria Sharapova, grabbed the 7th spot on the list. Despite having retired in February this year, Sharapova continues to be one of the most talked-about female athletes on Twitter. She is the only Russian to hold the coveted Career Grand Slam and has featured in multiple fashion assignments because of her supermodel looks.

Having won her last Grand Slam at the 2014 Roland Garros, Sharapova’s lingering shoulder injuries became a big obstacle to her game. Boasting a Twitter followership of 8.5 million, Sharapova often updates her fans on her travels and promotes her premium chocolate brand, Sugarpova.
