Former NASCAR Champion Carl Edwards Expresses Interest in Returning for One-Off Race

Lately, some of the NASCAR drivers now retired from full-time racing have been making one-off appearances across the three national series. Now, one of the biggest names in NASCAR from the past, Carl Edwards, has expressed his interest in returning to NASCAR for a one-off race.

Edwards last raced in 2017 in the Cup Series and has since been pursuing other interests outside of NASCAR. He recently watched the Bristol dirt race and was pretty fascinated by NASCAR’s return to dirt racing after a long time.

Speaking to FOX, Edwards admitted that he has been entertaining thoughts about returning to the sport for a short stint; he misses his time behind the wheel and would like to reconnect with some of his former colleagues and competitors.

“I have thought about it a little bit. I miss the driving part a lot, I miss the people, I don’t miss the schedule. But something like that, a one-off would be a lot of fun,” Edwards said.

Carl Edwards looks at road courses for potential NASCAR return

The former Joe Gibbs Racing star had the chance to do some sim testing at Daytona and he enjoyed that. Edwards then went on to say that if he does return for a race, it would most probably be on a road course.

“Towards the end of my career, I really enjoyed the road courses. So if I were to do something, it would probably be on a road course,” he said.

“Or if NASCAR, by chance, changes the package where there’s no downforce and about 1000 horsepower. I’d probably be interested in that too,” Edwards added.

Edwards could soon make it into the NASCAR Hall of Fame

The former Xfinity Series champion is now also on the ballot for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Being placed in the same group as some of the greatest champions in NASCAR would mean a lot to Edwards.

“To get to strap into these cars and drive for these people and to have this amazing career. To be honored like that next to folks who, to me, have given so much to the sport, it’s a pretty big deal. I don’t know how to describe it but it’s a true honor,” Edwards expressed.

Edwards also came the closest anyone can to the NASCAR Cup Series title in 2011. Edwards and Tony Stewart were tied on points at the end of the season, but Stewart won the tie-breaker, courtesy of more wins.

Many fans also remember the 41-year-old for his famous ‘backflip celebration’ after winning races. Now, the fans will await his NASCAR return quite eagerly.
