In 2020, Chase Elliott clinched the Cup Series championship. Unfortunately, since then, he was unable to defend the title, and it went to teammate Kyle Larson. Quite recently, the #9 driver penned a new contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports. Earlier, he sat down with The Athletic for an interview to talk about the contract. Among other subjects, he talked about his faith in the team but admitted that thing could get tougher for him.

He said, “My dad [Bill Elliott] always said when I was growing up that it goes in waves. You’ve got to ride it when you’re on top and just try to fight for what you can when you’re not. I’m sure there’s gonna be a time where we’re in a rut again and you’re gonna have to fight your way back out of it. I don’t think you can ride the wave on top forever. I just don’t think that’s a realistic thing in this sport. But we want to try. We want to try to make that reality. But I think there are going to be times where you’re going to have to really dig hard to have a decent day.”

At the Daytona 500, the #9 driver finished at the tail of the Top 10. However, at the Auto Club Speedway earlier this weekend, he got tangled up with his teammate Larson, and crashed out. This just goes to show that the driver has the pace to win, but luck was not on his side on that day.

When the contact happened, a furious Chase Elliott swore at his teammate, as he felt that he was at fault. As it turned out, Larson was leading when Elliott made a move. However, the #5 driver failed to see his opponent and slammed the door in his face. This resulted in poor old Elliott spinning out.
