A few years ago, while talking to Graham Bensinger on his show, Dale Earnhardt Jr spoke about the time his health was greatly affected due to the multiple concussions he received over the years. His health condition was so bad that at a point he had to quit racing mid-season.

During the interview, Bensinger asks him about the notes that he used to make on his iPhone. He inquired if those were in case something really bad happened.

To this, Dale replied, “I felt compromised in my head. You know I’d feel delicate and if I was to have another random rare high-impact crash that could injure me severely, so severely that I wouldn’t be able to communicate properly.”

“I wanted there to be some sort of documentation of what had been happening to me and what I have been going through. Whether that would serve any purpose other than to serve people some knowledge I guess.”

He goes on to mention that he was doing that out of fear. He says, “I was writing that down out of fear.”

Then Graham asks him “fear of what?”. Dale stated that he was afraid of what was happening to him.

Turning audibly emotional, Dale goes on to said, “I was having these simple little crashes that were giving me problems. Why? Why am I not able to deal with these crashes that everyone else around me can deal with and I used to be able to deal with?”

He also mentioned the notes were in case his doctor needed this information since he wasn’t going to be able to remember it. Fortunately, Dale miraculously recovered through that phase and went back to racing before finally concluding his racing career.

The graveyard has cars like Danica Patrick’s Wonder Woman race car that was featured at the final race at the Kansas Speedway in 2017. Dale mentions the graveyard to be “…a way to have something cool out here that someone will stumble upon some day and wonder what exactly was going on and why there are all these wrecked cars laying around.”
