Jimmie Johnson Wants to Set an Example for Stock Car Drivers Interested in a Indy Car Career

Jimmie Johnson says that he hopes to be an example for stock car drivers wanting to make the shift to IndyCar. The seven-time NASCAR champion has been very vocal about his plans to race in the IndyCar Series next season.

He recently even made a surprising revelation about how many IndyCar races he aims for in 2021. The IndyCar Series is a childhood dream for Johnson, and he is working towards fulfilling it.

Jimmie Johnson said that he wants to be the one to bridge the gap between the major racing leagues, NASCAR and the IndyCar Series.

“I know there are many Indy Car drivers interested in trying stock car. And I do know there are many stock car drivers that want to try Indy Car,” Johnson said.

So hopefully I can be somebody to help take down this barrier between the two sports here in North America and we can see a lot more crossover,” Johnson added.

Johnson also opined that the Aeroscreen feature added to Indy cars recently has significantly improved safety for drivers. The IndyCar Aeroscreen feature improves driver safety and prevents crashes and accidents.

It (Aeroscreen) has raised the safety level of those cars tremendously. I think in some respects, from an intrusion through the windshield and even a car impaling on top of an Indy Car.

“I think they’re stronger in some respects than what a NASCAR vehicle is. When you look at the dimensions and the openings that are available and the tutorials that are around, I really think they raise the threshold,” Johnson said.

Johnson made a surprising revelation on Dale Earnhardt Jr’s podcast this week about his IndyCar Series plans. Johnson said he is looking at 12-13 races for the Indy Car season.

“We’re out trying to find funds. Literally trying to raise sponsorship funds to run the full road course and street circuit schedule that Indy Car has. That would be my dream world to run 12 or 13 Indy Car races,” Johnson said.

Johnson took part in his first test in an Indy car a few weeks ago with Chip Ganassi Racing. He ran the test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
