Last weekend, 23XI Racing’s Kurt Busch stunned many when he won the Cup race at the Kansas Speedway. This was also a truly emotional moment for Kyle Petty.

As it happened, before Kurt Busch ran with it, the #45 number belonged to the late Adam Petty. After jumping over several hoops, 23XI Racing finally got a chance to use the number. Then came that glorious victory, and Kyle Petty couldn’t be any happier.

He said, “I’m not lying. When Kurt was running (Larson) down, I’m in Kiawah, South Carolina, and you could have heard me in Kansas City. I was pulling for Kurt Busch. I was screaming. … I probably looked like Tom Cruise on Oprah Winfrey’s couch — when he jumped up and down on her couch.”

So far in the 2022 NASCAR Cup season, Busch has performed reasonably well. Prior to his unexpected triumph, the #45 driver’s best finish was 3rd at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. He was also 5th at Phoenix, 6th at Martinsville, and 8th at California. On Sunday, at the Texas Motor Speedway, he finished 13th in the NASCAR All-Star Race.

Although he missed out on the $1 million cash prize, he can take comfort that this has no effect on the championship. On the bright side, he knows that his Kansas win has helped him qualify for the Playoffs.
