Potential Kurt Busch Replacement Ty Gibbs Shines as He Grabs His First Major NASCAR Cup Series Milestone Despite a Speeding Penalty

For the third race in a row, Kurt Busch was absent from the Cup series race as he has not been medically cleared. As a result, the 23XI Racing team has roped in Ty Gibbs to deputize for him while the 2004 Cup champion recovers.

After a 16th place and 17th place finish at Pocono and Indianapolis, Gibbs stormed to a fine 10th place at Michigan.

What made this feat even more amazing is the fact that Gibbs picked up a mid-race penalty.

He was guilty of speeding in the pitlane, so the official hit him with the sanction. Nevertheless, he decided to put his head down and try and mount a comeback from his little setback.

How did the Michigan weekend pan out for Ty Gibbs?

Gibbs’ 10th place finish capped off a fantastic day for 23XI Racing as it complemented Bubba Wallace’s excellent 2nd place, behind Kevin Harvick.

Though if we’re being honest, Wallace was gutted to miss out on the win and felt that he had failed himself and the team. Their results only go to show that the 23XI Racing team as a whole have improved a lot.

In other words, Wallace’s second-place finish was not a fluke. Especially since he has been turning in consistent performances lately.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend in the office for the 19-year-old Ty Gibbs. This is because he headed into the Cup race on the back of a race win in the Xfinity Series class earlier.

For that, he managed to fend off a stern challenge from Justin Allgaier, and notched up his fifth Xfinity win of the season.
