Brittney Griner was heading into Russia to make another mark in her basketball journey. However, in February, the former number one pick was detained. And for the past five months, Griner is yet to be close to returning back home. Recently, it took a turn for the worse as her trial ended with a Russian court sentencing her to nine years in prison. However, there is another shocking fact hidden in her punishment.

After completing the WNBA season, Griner was ready to play basketball. The Phoenix Mercury center traveled to Russia to switch things up. Airport officials caught the WNBA All-Star with cannabis oil vape cartridges. After her trial began, even a medical prescription didn’t give Griner any aid.

However, there is more to it. Going into the Russian penal colony, Brittney Griner may have to work in prison while serving her sentence.

Brittney Griner is not just in a normal prison

In Russia, penal colonies are the most common type of prison. And Griner could get similar treatment. Griner’s lawyers felt unfair as they claimed their evidence was ignored by the court. Griner was clear she wasn’t aware of the laws in Russia related to cannabis oil. While Griner is currently far away from the possibility of returning home soon, there remains hope for the center as the US goverment has offered Russia a prisoner exchange in an attempt to free Griner.

And Russia has reportedly said is it “ready to discuss” the deal, but experts say it will likely take time for such a deal to come through, given the rise in tensions between both nations following the war in Ukraine. In addition, with the current situation, Griner could be subject to doing labor activities. Going into a Russian penal colony, prisoners are often required to work.
