WNBA star Brittney Griner holds her wife, Cherelle Griner, closest to her heart. The duo has been happily married since 2019. Cherelle has been Griner’s biggest support during the toughest phases of her life.

Once, BG penned down her disappointing experience while planning to make her wife’s birthday a special one in her biographical memoir. However, Griner ended up in a tricky situation, as things did not go as she would have expected.

Brittney Griner released her book, In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Court, in 2014. The Phoenix Mercury center revealed that she planned on surprising Cherelle with a mini schnauzer puppy on her birthday. So, they went to the breeder together to pick one up. Unfortunately, Cherelle was upset about them getting a dog. Griner did not want Cherelle to start crying again and drove her car at twice the speed limit to get home quickly.

Brittney Griner gets an over-speeding ticket

Griner got pulled up for over-speeding by two police officers. BG stated that the first officer was a little tough on her while the second officer was nicer. He asked if she was an athlete by pointing out her tall height. BG told the second officer that she was a basketball player while the first cop asked for her license.

The first officer went back to his patrol car to check Griner’s credentials and returned a while later. He asked Brittney Griner the reason why she drove so fast. BG admitted to making a mistake, claiming to have gotten ‘spaced out’.

Luckily, the second officer got his partner to cool down, but Griner could not leave without any consequences. The first officer handed BG a ticket and said, “I could have taken you to jail for this.”

Meanwhile, Cherelle bonded a bit with the puppy named Dylan and gave him some water. BG hoped that things would get better when they reach home as she had booked a horse-and-carriage event. She also wanted to go on her first horse ride, as she was scared by the idea.

Griner blames herself for ruining Cherelle’s big day

Griner also had an MRI lined up for her knee after picking up Dylan and dealing with the officers. BG felt she would make it to the MRI without a fuss, but things took a completely different turn. Brittney Griner said, “I thought Relle would be excited about Dylan. Instead, she couldn’t even look at me, and she ended up canceling the carriage ride.”

The eight-time WNBA star felt really bad about ruining Cherelle’s birthday and blamed herself for it. However, the disappointing incident did not faze out Cherelle’s love for BG as they remain dedicated to each other through thick and thin.
