WNBA star Brittney Griner continues to make the headlines, as she remains in a Russian jail after being arrested earlier this year. This is arguably the biggest challenge she has faced in her life. However, this is not the first time she is facing a big challenge. Griner has previously been a victim of hate due to her political views. Many have even gone as far as disliking her for her sexuality. However, Griner didn’t slow down and continued to make huge strides in her career. Once in school, she started doing certain things, which led to her father being furious at her.

Griner has been one of the best players in the WNBA. However, she had a difficult time at home during her childhood days. She had to face her father’s strict upbringing and rules in her childhood. In her biographical memoir, ‘In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court’, she discussed an incident where she tried to make fun of her teacher, which led to her father being furious at her.

Brittney Griner revealed the incident of her teacher complaining to her father

Griner, in her memoir, revealed an incident from her school days when she was a ‘class clown.’ She tried to misbehave with her teacher, despite her warnings. However, to her surprise, her teacher called her father, Raymond Griner. Her father was very furious at her on call.

Griner wrote in her memoir: “‘Uh… uh…’ I stammered, and before I could finish, he cut me off. ‘That’s enough,’ he said. ‘I’ll deal with your ass when you get home.'”

Brittney Griner then spent the day roaming outside to avoid her father. However, that didn’t work out very well for her. She stayed silent the whole day and tried to avoid going home. However, she realized that she was just delaying the ‘inevitable’. She even entered her home from the back door, but her father noticed. She tried to run away from her father, but he caught her and beat her with ‘the hand mixed with the belt’.

Griner turned down playing basketball in Russian prison

Brittney Griner’s life has been about basketball. She has played at the top level for a long time now. However, she was recently offered to play basketball inside her prison in Russia. But she declined to play, as it was ‘too painful’ for her to play in such circumstances.

“She said, ‘Maybe if I’m here longer, but not now,'” Maria Blagovolina, Brittney Griner’s lawyer told ESPN.

Indeed, it must be hard for her to think about playing basketball in such an atmosphere. She has been in custody since February this year when she was caught by Russian customs agents for carrying vape cartridges with hashish oil. Her next hearing is reportedly scheduled for October 25 and if the initial decision is upheld this time, she would have to spend more jail time in Russia.
