When we talk about the NBA’s elite rivalries in the recent past, the one that immediately comes to mind is Golden State Warriors vs Cleveland Cavaliers. For half a decade, the two sides battled each other for league supremacy. With stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry and others shining in their prime, it was a treat for the fans. However, a key absentee during the Cavs’ title reign in 2016, was the experienced Draymond Green.

If anyone has a list of dominant defenders in this generation and leaves out the name of Draymond Green, they’d be lying to you. Still a key part of the Warriors setup, the 32-year-old shone during Steve Kerr’s golden coaching days. When the two franchises feuded from 2015-18, Cleveland came out on top just once. But according to former Cavalier Richard Jefferson, Draymond’s absence was the primary reason for the success.

In 2015, Stephen Curry’s men got the better of LeBron James and co. As a result, the following season was a matter of pride and redemption. With both sides making it to the summit clash again, the entire series changed when Green was suspended for Game-5 of the Finals due to a flagrant foul. Eventually, GSW lost the encounter, and lost the series in seven games. Would things have been different in Draymond’s presence?

One of the forwards for the Cavaliers from 2015-17, Richard Jefferson recently made a stunning statement. In his opinion, Draymond Green’s inclusion in Game-5 could’ve potentially altered the scheme of things.

Taking to Twitter, the now 41-year-old said, “If @money23green doesn’t get suspended I don’t know if we win in 2016. It certainly helped not hurt having him out there! Guess we’ll never know!” Rest assured, the result will be something to always ponder about.
