The Washington Wizards hosted the Golden State Warriors on Monday Night where Stephen Curry led the Warriors pack to victory with 41 points. While he danced around the court, the arena erupted in boisterous applause for the two-time MVP. As the NBA world noted the reaction, they also spotted the stands covered with blue and white jerseys with the number 30 written on them. For head coach Steve Kerr, who played for the Chicago Bulls back in the 90s, this sight felt like a deja vu moment.

He said, “Playing with the Bulls, half the crowd’s got red 23 jerseys (Michael Jordan’s jersey) on. Now, half the crowd’s got blue and yellow 30 jerseys.” He then declared Curry to be the modern era’s Michael Jordan. Following his comments, ex-NBA Star Jay Williams drew a parallel between the NFL and the NBA to explain the Stephen Curry effect.

On the ‘KJM’ show, Jay Williams, Max Kellerman and Keyshawn Johnson weighed in on Steve Kerr’s comments. While Williams and Johnson stated that Curry could be in the narrative of being the greatest of all time, Kellerman vehemently opposed this. Following this, Williams brought NFL legend Tom Brady into the conversation.

Williams pointed out that the New Englands Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick is considered to be a legend but has only managed to win 2 playoff games without the Patriots’ former superstar QB Tom Brady. With this in mind, he stated that Bill Belichick’s equivalent in the NBA was San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. Kellerman added that Popovich couldn’t have been the best without Tim Duncan.

Following this, Williams stated that the Spurs are in the bottom half of the league table. He claimed people don’t show up to watch them. He then mentioned the record-breaking turnout in the game between the Warriors and the Spurs.

The ex-NBA star said, “Not a lot of people always go to San Antonio Spurs games. Do you know when the Warriors came through 68,323 came to the game? It set its individual game record. Just to see Steph Curry. That’s what he brings to the game.” Williams stated that this is the effect Steve Kerr was talking about. 

Curry responds to Steve Kerr

Moments after Steve Kerr’s comments, Curry responded to them during a press conference after the game. He stated that these words of praise were special. The four-time NBA champion said, “He [Coach Kerr] understood what the roadshows look like and opposing arenas when fans come out and how Dubnation’s growing over the years. So that’s special.”

Curry then spoke about the energy that fans emulate every time he enters the court. It is a feeling that he said he never takes for granted. He added that putting on a show for the fans is a way of thanking them for the energy and electrifying atmosphere that they create.
