On 24 July 1992, the NBA gained a legendary player. It was on this day Shaquille O’Neal was selected by the Orlando Magic. Louisiana State University drafted him with the first overall pick at the NBA draft.

The event was held in Portland, Oregon. Most often it happens in New York, however, in 1992 it was different. In his 82 games in the NBA, he averaged 23.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and 1.9 assists per game. This led to him being known as the Rookie of the Year. That was the time when Michael Jordan was everywhere. Jordan was named as the all-star in 1985. Following that, Shaq became the first rookie known as an all-star.

Lucille O’Neal, Shaq’s mother, shared some of his childhood stories in an episode of “Through Mom’s Eyes.” TODAY’s Sheinelle Jones spoke with her about her experiences as a young mother, and her son’s journey to becoming an NBA player. Lucille even cooked Shaq’s favourite meal.

As the older child, Shaq’s mother described him as being a good example to his siblings. She also revealed the difficulties of growing up in a financially strapped family.

Shaq began playing basketball when he was six years old, according to her. Speaking of Shaq’s first time playing at such a young age. She said: “The McDonald’s All American game on worldwide television and I said we could do something with this because the opportunity was beginning to present itself so that he could go to college”.

In the history of the NBA, Shaq was one of the greatest players. He made such a major impact on the game. As of now, his 27.2 points per game average still stands as the second-highest in the Magic’s history.
