James Harden has to be one of the luckiest men in the NBA right now. He has not been exactly setting the house on fire these past two years, but he has already signed two million dollar contracts with two teams. In yesterday’s match, Harden proved that while he has still something left in his tank, his scoring has greatly suffered since his hamstring injury. Some might say the playoffs were never his strongest suit, but to see his sudden rapid decline is hard, even for the harshest of his critics.

Nonetheless, there has been news floating in that Harden will be offered a new supermax contract by the Philadelphia 76ers. What’s a supermax contract, you say? A SuperMax contract is basically just the largest paycheck an NBA player can get. It is also known as the ‘Designated Veteran Player Exception’. With this, a team could sign a player for another year, at 25% of the team’s overall salary limit, and each year they get an extra 8%. Harden was supposed to exercise the $47.3 million player option for the 2022-23 season, but he fumbled the paperwork.

James Harden and the Sixers

James Harden was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers during February of this year. He, along with Paul Millsap, went to the Sixers from the Brooklyn Nets. The Sixers gave Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, Ben Simmons as compensation to the Nets alongside their 2022 and 2027 first-round draft picks.

Sixers president Daryl Morey has an unwavering fondness for Harden stemming from their days together in Houston. Morey’s not-so-secret plan was to lock him up to a max contract in Philly, right? The franchise didn’t give up Ben Simmons for a rental player. But the 10-time All-Star has been showing signs of decline. A playoff exit could cause the Sixers to think about hitting the reset button.

But according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Harden will definitely be back in Philly next season alongside Joel Embiid. The Sixers might get him at a bargain rate while trying to sell Harden’s nagging hamstring injury as the reason for his struggles.
