Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is known for his physical style of play. With changing times where even the slightest of contacts are going in favour of the offensive player, it is becoming increasingly difficult for players of his kind to get the nod from the referees.

On Saturday, when Milwaukee Bucks played Boston Celtics, Giannis had one decision against him that seemed otherwise. He was called for a charging foul on Marcus Smart when it felt like the Celtics man was falling before the contact.

These things, Antetokounmpo felt, could land a player into trouble. He felt that when players tend to draw fouls, they need to be careful about their landings to avoid injuries.

“I cannot be thinking about plays if I am going to get hurt. I think I am pretty good about avoiding situations that you can get hurt and avoiding guys on the floor,” Antetokounmpo was quoted as saying by ESPN.

“If somebody is taking a charge, you have to step in the right place so you don’t sprain your ankle, or for you not to step wrong and hurt your knee or something, but I think I’m pretty good with that. I know how to avoid contact. I was pretty skinny my whole career so I know how to avoid the contact.

“I just try to be aggressive and try to be in the moment and my instinct is going take over.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo will continue to be physical

Antetokounmpo finished the game against Celtics with 32 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists. He felt that the referees tend to award fouls when the player does not go in strong and looks for a foul. However, he said that he will not be one of those players, and continue to be strong.

“But when you’re flopping and kind of going into the contact and throwing the ball out, they’re just going to call foul, but that’s not who I am, that’s not what I’m gonna do,” he said.

“I’m just gonna try to power through contact. It’s going to be … where if a guy grabs me or pushes me, I’ve got to show it more, but I think I’ve done a better job of showing it more so the refs can see that the guys are holding me, pushing me and just being physical.”
