Dillon Brooks’ Run With the Memphis Grizzlies
Brooks has had a breakout season following his injury-riddled sophomore season with averages of 16.1 points and 2.1 made three-pointers per game on 39% shooting from deep and 42% overall. The minutes are on par with his rookie year, while the scoring increased 5 points.
Selected by the Houston Rockets with the 45th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and acquired by Memphis on draft night for a future second-round draft pick, Brooks currently ranks fourth in his draft class in 2019-20 scoring average (min. 30 games played). The Mississauga, Ontario native averaged 11.0 points per game as a rookie during the 2017-18 season, the second-highest rookie scoring average ever by a Canadian-born player.

How the Extension Affects Brooks
The signing keeps Brooks in town at a team-friendly rate, yet the annual cap hits north of $11M. This represents a substantial pay raise from what the forward was making during his first few years in the league.
Brooks’ new deal is fully guaranteed without any options. It will be worth $11.4MM in the first year, $12.2MM in the second and $11.4MM in the third.

After years of salary-cap issues, the rebuilt Grizzlies now have plenty of room going forward. Hence, Brooks’ salary won’t be an issue. His extension is the first of what should be several long-term deals that Memphis will hand out to its young talent.
Had Brooks not inked a deal, he would have hit restricted free agency at a time when few teams had available cap space.
Brooks recently found himself in the spotlight along with teammate Ja Morant for comments that the pair made about Andre Iguodala, another teammate who made no secret of his desire to play somewhere other than in Memphis during the team’s rebuild.
