Carmelo Anthony Feels His Reunion With New York Knicks Could ‘Mess Their Plan’

Former New York Knicks‘ superstar Carmelo Anthony is enjoying a late rejuvenation of his career in Portland. After being dumped by the Houston Rockets mid-way through the 2018-19 season, he had a lot to prove. Playing with a chip on his shoulder, he more than exceeded expectations last year.

Could he have returned to the New York Knicks?

Melo had seven productive seasons with the Knicks. He hit unrestricted free agency after the 2019-20 season, hence a potential reunion could have been on the table. Arguably, their best player of this century, fans would have loved to see him back at the Garden. However, divulging why a return wasn’t on the cards, he said

“At this point, it wasn’t really a lot [of consideration]. The Knicks were making moves and were trying to figure out the direction they wanted to go in. They weren’t done making moves. I’m sure they have a plan. I don’t think me coming in and trying to mess their plan up was good for either party… They are rebuilding and figuring out what’s in their near future.”

The Knicks are truly rebuilding right now with a very youthful roster. Whereas, the Portland Trail Blazers are a genuine contender in the West with Damian Lillard and other key pieces in the team. One of which is Anthony himself.

After acquitting well with the franchise last season, he felt it was the right to continue –

“It was me personally wanting to be part of a situation I was already comfortable with. I just finished playing with these guys [in Portland] two, three months ago. I felt it was the right fit at this point of time where I’m at right now this particular year.”

Melo was averaging 15.4 points and 6.3 rebounds in 32.8 minutes last season. An offensive machine, he was crucial in easing the scoring burden on ‘Dame’ and CJ McCollum. However, he is likely to play a bench role this year with the return of Rodney Hood. Hence, he is an early favorite for the NBA ‘Sixth Man of the year’ award. Hopefully, the move turns well for both the Knicks and Melo.
