Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard picked LeBron James as his choice for the Most Valuable Player award this season.

James, 37, continues to put up top performances in his 17th season in the NBA. He has led the Los Angeles Lakers back into contention for the title. The Lakers were amidst one of the worst runs in their history when they signed James in 2018. After a rather lonely first year in purple and gold, Anthony Davis came to accompany him. Together, they have made the Lakers one of the favorites to win the title this season.

James’ 10.6 assists per game this season is more than anybody else’s in the season. To add to it, he also has 25.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Talking on the Jalen and Jacoby show, Lillard felt the level on which James has been performing makes him the MVP candidate.

“This season, I think it’s LeBron. They’re the No. 1 team in the West. They’ve been consistent all year long. For him to be at the age he’s at, with the number of miles that he has on his body, how often he’s talked about, the pressure they put on him every little thing that he does, and the level he’s performing at, in my opinion, I think he’s the MVP,” Lillard said. 

LeBron James or Giannis Antetokounmpo?

While James’ performances have been on top, many believed the reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo was the favorite to win the award for the second consecutive time. In fact, James’ name came up after his run of performances prior to heading into the league’s suspension.

Antetokounmpo was leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their second consecutive top of the table finish before the league’s suspension. The Bucks had the best record in the NBA with 53 wins when they suspended the league. Giannis, with 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game, was looking good for his second consecutive MVP award. But recently, there have been discussions on whether LeBron James deserves the award this season.
