It takes years to get overnight success. The tipping point comes only after one has put in enough effort into becoming successful. Zion Williamson is living proof of this ideology. He saw his fortunes turn very early on, at the tender age of 16.

Zion saw early recognition and shot to fame when a four-time Grammy award winner decided to show some respect to Zion. Out of the blue, rapper Drake decided to wear Zion’s school team jersey. On that very day, everything changed for the Salisbury-born.

An unforgettable day in the early life of Zion Williamson

Recently, Zion gave an interview where he reminisced about that unforgettable day. The 6’6” prodigy revealed:

“He posted it late at night. I woke up that morning to these crazy notifications on my phone. For a second, I was like, ‘something happened?!’ Something bad happened like a lot of like this is happening. But I went to Instagram, on text messages everybody was saying, go look at what Drake posted. I found it and I was just like ‘man, this is crazy coz other people noted Drake posted that pic of me or wearing my jersey before most of the world knew me.’ So I was just sitting, I don’t know why he wore my jersey, but thank you for the love and support.”

Zion even spoke about how his popularity skyrocketed at school. He said, “It was crazy at school, everybody asking me, ‘oh my god like, Drake, he wore your jersey.’ I’m 16 at the time and I’m looking like, ‘yeah, it’s my jersey’. I think that was like a start to everything because after that I went from No. 12 at Spartanburg Day School to Zion and everybody knew me.”

Perhaps Drake was impressed by his 50 points, 16 rebs, 5 blocks performance for Spartanburg Day School. What else can one ask for? A sensational rapper that the entire world follows is following a basketball-loving boy who is totally unknown, unbelievable!

Zanos at the NBA

Just three years down the line, Zion attracted the first overall draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. The 284 lbs forward dropped bombs on the court as he entered the NBA. He averaged 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in his rookie year but played only 24 games in the season.

Zion suffered a knee injury that forced him out of the season. As a result, his team couldn’t make it to the playoffs in 2020. But he has seriously committed himself to making a comeback and has worked on his health issues all through the summer.

One can expect an even scarier and dominant Zion entering the court in 2020-21. What an absolute transition it has been for him, going from a 16-year-old nobody to a 20-year-old upcoming sensation.
