After getting what the Los Angeles Lakers have been vying for a decade, the franchise had their own unique token of appreciation for LeBron James. They extended his stint with the purple and gold for another two years. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, his new contract is worth $85 million.
Booking the to-be Hall of Famer for as long as possible would have been a no-brainer for the Lakers. Can one imagine any other 35-year-old NBA player, who is in the 17th season of his career, still play in his prime? Well, if anybody can do it, then it’s King James.
The question is, what could be the reasons behind LeBron signing this contract? There are many. First of, with the way the Lakers have aligned the pieces this offseason, picking the best players, they have all the potential to raise another banner in the 2020-21 campaign.

Secondly, James still had two more years on his existing four-year deal that he signed in 2018, with a player option in 2020-21. Now, he will be bound till 2023, which is when his son Bronny finishes high school and might be able to enroll for the NBA Draft, provided the eligibility changes by then.

This is a very lucrative deal. One NBA analyst, who jumps at the opportunity to criticize Bron, said that his deal takes up so much cap size that the Lakers won’t be able to add in another big star.
Bron’s extension means that Anthony Davis might also want to stay longer. Davis and LeBron’s partnership on and off the court has been a treat to watch. Will they again create history by going for their second straight title?
