After an incredible run in last year’s regular season, the Toronto Raptors screeched to a disappointing halt in the playoffs. They were kicked out from the Bubble by the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. However, this is the least of their problems right now. With the offseason, one of their most integral stars is entering free agency- Fred VanVleet.
Ever since his rookie year, Fred has gone from averaging 2.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 0.4 steals to averaging 17.6 points,3.8 rebounds,6.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game last season.
He was one of the core pieces that helped the Raptors win their first franchise championship in 2019. Seeing what the 26-year-old is capable of on both ends of the floor, his free agency has stirred up plenty of speculation about his future destinations.

According to several trade rumors, the star has been linked to teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City Thunder. But is it in the best interest of VanVleet to leave for these teams? Or should the Toronto Raptors do everything in their power to keep him?
Fred VanVleet is an asset for the Toronto Raptors
It is Fred’s self-awareness that makes him the outstanding player that he is. His progress from an undrafted prospect to becoming a significant contributor in a championship-caliber team makes his value although more high.

Thus, it would be foolish of the Raptors to let him go. In any of the games he plays, he is one of the smartest players, and his deadly three-point shooting can intimidate his opponents significantly. But his skills aren’t the only parts of him that make him who he is. His leadership ability, risking big shots, and directing the game are much more intriguing.

The Raptors need him because of his scoring output and for the support he provides as a secondary player. With Kyle Lowry getting older and Pascal Siakam’s inconsistency, Fred has stepped up to fill in the gaps.
However, it is also clear that VanVleet plays better under a clear cut superstar. This was primarily seen against the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 finals, when he was behind Kawhi Leonard.

The Raptors are making cap space to get another such superstar this offseason. This means that VanVleet might have another shot at a title. Maybe both parties will benefit if they stick together. What do you think?
