“I Was Not Wanted Nor Welcomed”: Detroit Pistons Coach Poses Some Serious Questions in the Wake of George Floyd’s Death

Detroit Pistons coach Dwane Casey spoke out on the issue of racial discrimination in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Casey recalled how he, as a boy born in a black family, wasn’t welcome in a white school. He expressed his disappointment over how even after over half a century, things do not seem to have changed.
“Fifty-four years ago I was an eight-year-old boy living in rural Kentucky when the schools were desegregated. I walked into a white school where I was not wanted nor welcomed,” he said in a statement.
He recalled how it was difficult for him to be heard at a time when there was no (or very little) coverage. It was also a time without social media or cell phones.

“I can remember exactly how I felt as an eight-year-old child,” he said.
After having previously seen similar incidents, Floyd was disappointed on seeing the list on the rise.
“I understand the outrage because it seems the list continues to grow: Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd. The injustices continue to mount and nothing seems to be changing,” the statement further read. “Fifty-four years later, my son is now eight years old and I look at the world he is growing up in and wonder, how much has really changed?”

Everybody needs to fight together, says the Detroit Pistons coach
Casey further said that all people- black, white, and brown- need to fight together to bring about a change.
“It takes empathy, in its truest form. It takes a culture shift, it takes action. Let’s stop the injustice now. Let’s not allow another generation to continue to live in a world where they are treated as unequal. Now is the time for real change,” he said in the statement.

Casey, the NBA coach of the year in 2018, is currently in his second year as the head coach of Detroit Pistons. He worked seven years as the coach of Toronto Raptors between 2011 and 2018. He was the assistant coach of Dallas Mavericks during their title-winning campaign in 2011. Previously, he spent two years as Minnesota Timberwolves’ head coach and 11 years before that as Seattle Supersonics’ coach.
