There are plenty of talented freshmen seeking the limelight in college basketball this year. However, one name that stands out is Makur Maker, a towering center who plays for the Howard Bison men’s basketball team. Maker also has a cousin who plays in the NBA!

Makur Maker is just 20-years-old and was a five-star recruit coming out of high school. He devoted his services to Howard University upon graduation and looks to enter the NBA and follow in his cousin Thon Maker’s footsteps. 

Makur recently got down for a quick chat with ‘Stadium’ where he mentioned how he plays a different game than his cousin Thon. The latter is currently a free agent in the league who’s fighting for a spot in preferably the Cleveland Cavaliers’ roster. 

“I describe Thon to be more of a quick athlete. He has fast muscles he can get out on a run, and I’m more of a power guy. I like to bump,” Makur expressed. Both athletes touch nearly seven feet, with Makur falling just short at 6’11”. 

However, he feels that it creates a difference in their games if their body weight also comes into question. Makur’s listed weight is 235 pounds whereas his older cousin Thon is 221. 

“You can see the difference between our bodies That’s the biggest difference we could describe about our games,” the Howard University freshman said. 

Injury woes keep Makur Maker sidelined indefinitely

Makur Maker’s freshman year with Howard University did not get off to the brightest start. The team went 0-2 and Howard did a decent job of averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. 

However, he had apparently suffered a groin injury during pre-season training which limited his effectiveness on the court. The 6’11” center has now been rested by his team as a precautionary measure.

“He’s really banged up, and we’re going to shut him down until he gets healthy because right now he’s just not,” Howard’s coach Kenneth Blakeney said. “He’s not able to move, and I don’t want him to be counterproductive right now.”

Makur Maker is an incredible talent who can cover all areas of the court effectively. He claims he can play any position he’s offered but his recovery is the only thing that’s important right now.
