Australian Open runner up Dominic Thiem survived a first-round scare at the clay courts of Rio Open. He held off an inspired effort from Brazilian wild card Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. The final scoreline read 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in favour of the World No 4.

After performing strongly in the first set, Thiem started experiencing pain in his left knee all of a sudden. He had to take medical care in the changeover. This gave Alves a chance to get back into the match and he did exactly that, winning the second set 6-4. However, a determined Thiem fought through the pain to dominate Alves in the last set.

So, what was the knee injury all about and is it serious? Let’s find out from Dominic Thiem himself.

This is what Dominic Thiem had to say post-match about the issues in his keep –

“It was painful for some minutes but I didn’t pay attention. Because in the warm-up, everything was fine, in the first set everything was fine. Then, all of a sudden, luckily I’ve never had any issue with my knees. So, then it was very very scary for me because I felt that sharp pain in the knee. I called the physio straight away. But he made this test and told that basically everything is fine. Probably, it’s just because I hit myself. As I said, because I was pretty worried, never felt that pain in my knee before. But, I think I’m gonna have good treatment today.”

As Thiem explained, there’s nothing to worry about and it was just a minor scare. An injury is the last thing he needs after all the momentum he’s gained post a super successful Australian Open campaign. He’ll face 22-year-old Jaume Munar in the second round.

How do you think will the year be for Dominic Thiem?
