Every year a new schedule is released long before the NFL season. Fans around the world remain very excited to see which team will play which team, in what week, and at what place. Even though the schedule looks simple, creating is ain’t easy.

It takes a lot of time and effort from both machines and humans to create it. It is a lengthy procedure, and many things are kept in mind before releasing the final schedule. The commissioner of the league has the final say on the schedule, and after his nod of approval, the schedule is released.

Many softwares combine to to make the schedule. Computers work for a prolonged period to get the best one. The softwares and computers are operated under human supervision. Along with them, the broadcasting partners are also involved in the planning of the schedule. As a result, the schedule makers have to take care of a lot of things while making a perfect schedule.

Matchup Details in the NFL Season

Here are the details about how the Matchups are created in a season for every team:

  • A total number of 256 games played over 17 weeks.
  • A total number of 32 teams split into 2 conferences.
  • The two conferences NFC and AFC consist of 16 teams each.
  • Each conference has Four divisions which consist of Four teams each.
  • Every team has to play 17 fixtures in the season.
  • Each team has to play 6 games against the division rivals, both home and away.
  • Every team has to play 4 games vs different divisions in the conference: 2 Home & 2 Away
  • Each team has to play 4 games vs different divisions out of their conference.
  • Every team has to play 2 games in the conference based on standings. Eg. 1st vs 1st/ 2nd vs 2nd
  • Each team has to play 1 interconference match based on standings.

Rules & Regulations while making the schedule:

Apart from following the above matchup requirements, the NFL schedule makers need to keep some rules and regulations in their minds as well. Disregarding any one of these will result in penalty points and will be taken into consideration for the next season’s schedule.

  • No teams should play a 3-game road trip.
  • A team should not play a road game following a road Monday night football game. 
  • No team should play 2 road games to start a season.
  • A Team should not play 2 road games to finish the season.
  • Strong Sunday Monday & Thursday Night Football Schedule.
  • Equal cross-flexed games between CBS and Fox.

Apart from these, the schedule makers have to get further approvals from the teams regarding the availability of their stadium on a particular given date. After all that, commissioner Roger Goodell approves it, and the schedule finally gets releases for the NFL fans.
