Former NFL Players Compare Tua Tagovailoa to a ‘Side of Plain White Rice’

Veteran NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick made way for rookie Tua Tagovailoa to take center stage for the Miami Dolphins at the halfway stage of the 2020 NFL season. The Hawaii-born quarterback was picked by the Dolphins in this year’s NFL Draft (#5 overall).

His journey to the NFL has been nothing short of a ‘fairytale’. However, there are some analysts and former NFL players who believe that the hype surrounding the youngster is a bit ‘over the top’.

Jason Bell and Osi Umenyiora offer first thoughts on Tua Tagovailoa

On a recent segment of BBC’s The NFL Show, former NFL stars Jason Bell and Osi Umenyiora spoke about Tua’s performance in his first start for Miami Dolphins against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8.

The latter, in particular, said that Tua did not necessarily have a ‘positive’ debut but should bask in his first win in the league.

“He got the win but he didn’t do nothing in that game. You know what Tua was, you know when you order Chinese food and it comes with that little side of white plain rice that nobody eats? That was Tua in this game. He did absolutely nothing, he was just along for the ride. I mean come on, 12 for 22 with one touchdown?”

“I bet Ryan Fitzpatrick must’ve been like ‘you guys benched me for this guy?’ You’re out of your mind,” Umenyiora said on the show.

Of course, the former Alabama Crimson Tide footballer led the Dolphins to another win last Sunday. The AFC East franchise registered a comfortable 31-34 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9.

Tua threw for 248 yards with 2 passing TDs against the Cardinals. The Dolphins are now second in their division, with a 5-3 record at this stage of the league.
