Jerry Jones Slips Up Yet Still Lands Tyler Smith In Round One of The 2022 NFL Draft; But Who Is Cowboys’ Exciting New OT?

Dallas Cowboys under owner Jerry Jones are well versed in how to cover their tracks when they make mistakes. This year it seems, they were not able to trade up because some of the players they wanted didn’t fall. Jones seems to have made a mistake in not positioning his team in the best possible position.

Despite having considerations of three trade scenarios, Jones thought staying put was the way to go. The expectation from the first-round pick of the Cowboys was always going to be all business. But the franchise seems to be holding firm and putting their faith in offensive tackle Tyler Smith and his ceiling for the future.

Even Cowboys executive vice-president Stephen Jones was trying to alleviate any pressure of “starting right now” from Smith. The former Tulsa player could form the swing tackle partnership on the game day behind Tyron Smith and Terence Steele. He will have his work cut out for making it to the starting lineup against left guard Connor McGovern.

Jerry Jones grooming Tyler Smith for the Cowboys’ future?

The 24th overall pick seems to be already getting the backing from the people he would ultimately need soon. The Cowboys owner could also be readying Smith for taking Tyron Smith’s left guard duties. Tyron Smith hasn’t completed an entire NFL season since the 2015 campaign, and doubts seem to be slowly creeping in about him.

While Jones still has faith in his old guard, the 31-year-old is closing on the verge of being replaced in Dallas. The incoming Smith has made 23 starts over 3 seasons while earning All-AAC honors in 2020 and 2021. The stubbornness of the Cowboys‘ owner to remain inactive and avoid trading up could have had the opposite effect.

But the Draft is far from over for the Cowboys who will be looking for more future stars in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The Cowboys Nation will hope that the franchise can recruit another player who will be the star for the future.
